Random Ramblings of 8/12

I awoke to the heinous throbbing of my TMJ and the sound of four feet lumbering across the boards overhead, rather than the usual two. It will be a while before science realizes that quadrupedal humans are the way of the future, so I could only assume that an unfamiliar body had been invited into our home. Ugh. I had to go greet her.

The worst part about having a terminally ill family member in the house, I think, is having people in an out of your living room all day and night. Doctors, nurses, social workers, supply deliveries--every single one expecting you to greet them with a smile when it's too early in the morning for you to not hate them.

Hell, even my own body hated me. I was sure of it as I glared balefully at a box of Reese's puffs just long enough to hear my stomach lust after it. I walked away. How can I eat when it's like I've been shot in the face?

Naturally, I couldn't smile either. Not that I was always a pro at it... But, as I greeted the new nurse with an unconvinced Good Morning, I watched her shift from foot to foot, no doubt taken aback by my knitted eyebrows and deflated demeanor. The longer we stood, the tighter my face began to screw.

It wasn't until fifteen minutes later that I was able to safely retreat to my sanctuary in the darkness of closed eyelids atop a lumpy bed, teary-eyed with pain and worn with displeasure.
